Course Syllabus 20-21
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Civics will concentrate on national and state government. The course will examine how each function and discuss contemporary problems faced by each level. The course will make an effort to cover major constitutional issues. We will be covering a wide variety of topics related to civic engagement and government. Duties of Citizenship, (voting, volunteerism etc.) are a strong component of the course.

Learning targets
Each day a list of content targets will be shown/shared with the students to examine and look at.
Assignments/Grades
Students may be assigned daily work and it may not be put in the grade book. They are still expected to complete the work that has been assigned. All students work will be completed by the due date. Any work that is not turned in by the due date will receive a zero. If a student turns in an assignment late(after assigned due date) they shall receive no more than 50% on said assignment. Students will be allowed to retake exams. Students will also be allowed to redo projects for a lesser percentage of grade. Please look at infinite campus to see what your grade really is.
Exam Retakes
Students will be allowed to take an exam 2 times. The original time with one retake. Before a student can retake an exam they need to email the teacher to request the retake. They will have to demonstrate that they have now gained enough competencies to have the retake. The student will have 5 days to retake the exam from the day it was put in the grade book.
Technology
Students will be using their chromebooks in the classroom on an almost-daily basis so they should be prepared with a charged, functioning computer and their charging cord. Students on devices are expected to be on task and using the device only for the assigned purpose. If a student is not using the device for approved purposes it will be taken and they will be referred to the office.
Text books
All textbooks are required to be covered by the beginning of the second week of school.
Cellphones
Cellphones are not to be used in the classroom at all. They are to remain in the students’ book bag or locker. If a student chooses to bring a cellphone to class there will be a bin to place their phone into. If a student is seen with a phone or in possession of a phone it will be confiscated by the teacher.
Hall Passes
students need to sign out in the sign out book before using the restroom or going to their locker. Students may not be allowed to leave right away and should wait for an opportune time to ask to leave the classroom.
Current events
Current events are an important part of becoming an actively engaged citizen. Students will be discussing current events from time to time. Every Friday Students will also be watching CNN Student News. CNN Student News is a ten-minute, commercial-free, daily news program designed for middle and high school classes. It is produced by the journalists at CNN. This award-winning show and its companion website are available free of charge throughout the school year.
